My Story

I wanted to share a short story with you about why I decided to become an Insurance Agent.

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10 — This scripture has been my go-to in times of weakness and insurmountable adversity. This was never more true than on 12/6/2020.

Brian-Michael Merrick with his mother, Ms. Upchurch
I received the call no parent wants to hear; a call from the York Pennsylvania’s Coroner’s Office telling me they believe they have my son and need me to identify the body. And after a few identifying questions, it was confirmed that it is in fact my oldest son Brian-Michael Merrick, 27 years old.

The only reason I entered this industry is because I saw firsthand how devastating it is to be financially unprepared for unexpected loss. My son was young, only 27 and I had to ask family and friends for donations to help me bury him. This was truly a humbling experience as I had not been accustomed to asking for anything from anybody. My experience with asking for financial help was eye opening.

Everyone feels sorry for your loss and frequently asks if there is anything they can do to help. However, when the need arises for monetary support, you may find like I did, the ones you thought you could count on are nowhere to be found. Thats when I decided I would never find myself in this situation again.

I was drawn to the life insurance industry because I did not want another mother, father, child, or sibling to have to go through the horrors that I went through.

There is no way to avoid life’s inevitable heartbreaks, and painful misfortunes but we can safeguard ourselves by instituting protections for those purposes. I could not save my son and that guilt weighs heavy on my heart, but maybe, I can find some peace and absolution in helping others, protect themselves and sustain their livelihood amidst the devastations of loss.
